Bloomsbury, NJ (July 26th, 2022) – On the afternoon of July 25th, a chain reaction accident shut down Interstate 78 during rush hour.

The accident that happened on Monday left several people injured and resulted in vehicles in all three lanes, according to the New Jersey State Police. The chain-reaction accident was reported just before 4:30 p.m. near the mile marker 7.2 in Hunterdon County, not far from the Warren County border.

Based on reports, a 2019 Kenworth vehicle hauling a utility vehicle was being driven by an Athens, Georgia resident. This vehicle rear-ended a small sedan being driven by a resident from Mount Laurel.

The small sedan, a Mazda CX-5 subsequently veered off to the left of the interstate and collided with a guardrail. Police indicate that this collision led a wheel from the small sedan to become detached and strike a Kia Sorento that was traveling on the left lane of I-78.

The Kenworth then proceeded to travel eastbound and then collided with a Toyota Camry, which was being driven by a resident from New York City. As a result of the collision, this Toyota then collided with a Freightliner commercial truck that was also hauling a utility trailer. The Freightliner was reportedly being driven by a resident from Minden City, Michigan.

Following this collision, the Kenworth continued onto the right lane of the interstate and then collided with another commercial box truck, which was being driven by a resident from Elizabeth, New Jersey.

This commercial vehicle collided with the first box truck before careening off the road and hitting a guardrail.

Based on police reports, the Kenworth driver sustained moderate injuries.

The person driving the Mazda sustained serious injuries. The passengers of this vehicle, a 1-year-old and a 4-year-old traveling in this vehicle sustained moderate injuries, according to official reports.

The two Freightliner commercial drivers along with the person driving the Toyota sustained minor injuries.

The interstate was cleared by the investigation shortly before 10 p.m., according to the New Jersey Department of Transportation. I-78 was closed for several hours on the eastbound lanes. It was also closed on the westbound lanes until around 5:45 p.m., which was after medical helicopters arrived to take patients to the hospital.

This serious multi-vehicle wreck continues to be under police investigation. There are no reports that this accident was caused as a result of drug or alcohol use.

Auto accidents are very traumatic experiences. The simple thought of your vehicle colliding with another can be terrifying, but unfortunately, these types of accidents happen every day in the State of New Jersey. With the heavy amounts of traffic taking place every day on the roads across the state, a serious accident can happen at any given moment.

As terrifying as accidents can be, the incident can be made even worse when it is part of a multi-vehicle accident. Multi-vehicle accidents, or chain reaction accidents, are those accidents that involve two or more vehicles. These accidents usually begin when two vehicles get into a traffic accident and either one or both vehicles collide with other nearby vehicles. Sometimes, the two vehicles do not get involved in other collisions, but the accident itself causes the nearby drivers to collide with one another as a result of the first accident.

Multi-vehicle accidents can vary in severity. These accidents tend to result in serious injuries but the outcome of each accident will depend on several factors, primarily the speeds at which the vehicles were traveling. Other factors that can affect the outcome of an accident include the number of vehicles involved, the age of those involved, and whether or not vehicle passengers were wearing a seatbelt.

Although chain reaction vehicle accidents can be caused by driving while intoxicated, they can also be caused by distracted driving, following too closely behind or tailgating, road rage, speeding, bad weather, and even rubbernecking.

When an accident happens, it is important to understand that the at-fault driver can be held financially responsible for the accident. Depending on the injuries sustained in the crash, an injured person may be able to recover monetary compensation for his or her hospital bills, loss of income, loss of employment benefits, and more. Unfortunately, holding the at-fault driver responsible for the damages can be difficult, since it can be challenging to prove fault in a multi-vehicle accident.

Fortunately, filing a claim for compensation after a chain-reaction accident can be simplified by working alongside a skilled auto accident attorney. With the right legal representation, it will be possible to recover damages including hospital bills, physical therapy, loss of earning potential, disfigurement, loss of quality of life, and more.
